All You Need to Know About Fleas

Fleas can cause a lot of discomfort and make your pet’s life miserable. They are one of the most common parasites that can affect cats and dogs. Pets can pick up fleas very easily, and once caught, an infestation can spread rapidly. But don't stress! This is a completely treatable and preventable issue. Here’s everything that you need to know about fleas and how to keep your furry friends safe.

What are fleas?

Fleas are tiny wingless parasitic insects. They crawl and jump, and live and breed on your pet's fur while feeding on their blood.

When fleas start reproducing, their numbers can increase rapidly. This then results in a severe and unpleasant infestation.

How to spot a flea infestation

Fleas are very small and move very quickly. They can be hard to spot. Particularly on cats, where they can scurry away into the cat’s dense fur. At a glance, fleas look like little brown or dark red ovals. However, they tend to burrow deeper into their host's fur when the fur is spread, making them difficult to spot. If you can’t spot any fleas, keep an eye out for ‘flea dirt’. Comb your pet with a flea comb and wipe on a damp tissue. If there is a flea infestation, the flea dirt will stain the tissue red.

Another key clue that your pet may be suffering from a flea infestation is if they are experiencing uncharacteristic scratching and itching. This itching can lead to irritated skin, scabs and wounds, or hair loss.

 Causes of fleas

Your pets can get fleas from being outside, from other pets with flea infestations, from an indoor flea infestation, or from a neighbouring flea infestation.

Types of fleas

The two types of fleas that can take residence in your pet's fur are cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) and dog fleas (Ctenocephalides canis). Cat fleas are actually the most common species of fleas that are found on dogs in Australia. Dog fleas are more uncommon but are occasionally found.

Treatment and prevention

Combing and bathing can be helpful in removing the bulk of the fleas on your pet. It is also important that you don't forget to clean and remove potential fleas and eggs from your household items. Thoroughly wash your bedding, vacuum your carpets often and steam clean to remove any eggs.

The best way to deal with fleas is prevention, however. Pet Lovers Club provides complete 365-day-a-year parasite protection for your beloved pets. Find what suits you and your furry friend best to keep them flea-free and happy.
