What is the best way to give my cat or dog a tablet?
Tablets can be either hidden in your pet’s favourite treat or wet food, or it can be administered directly to them, placing it at the back of the tongue.
My dog or cat is pregnant, am I still able to use Pet Lovers Club products?
The worming tablets that are delivered to you every three months are licenced for use during pregnancy. Worming of pregnant bitches and queens is recommended to limit transmission of worms to pups and kittens. Often worming is encouraged at the time of mating, then just prior to giving birth, avoiding the first month of pregnancy. Before giving the tablets, check with your veterinarian about their recommendation for timing of worming during pregnancy.
The monthly topical flea treatment for cats and monthly flea and heartworm chew for dogs have not been trialled in pregnant animals, so we would recommend pausing the use of these products during gestation.
Heartworm Questions:
Can I give heartworm Pet Lovers Club heartworm treatment to a dog or cat that has been diagnosed with heartworms?
Heartworm preventives do not kill adult heartworms. Also, giving a heartworm preventive to a dog infected with adult heartworms may be harmful or deadly. If microfilariae are in the dog's bloodstream, the preventive may cause the microfilariae to suddenly die, triggering a shock-like reaction and possibly death.
Can I give the Pet Lovers Club heartworm preventative after a heartworm injection given by my vet?
Yes. The annual injection heartworm preventative provided by vets has the same active ingredient as our Simparica Trio and trials have confirmed that they can be supplied together without overdosing concern.
When should my dog have a heartworm test?
If your dog is over 6 months of age and has not been on regular heartworm preventative medication, it is recommended to have heartworm test prior to starting.
If you have suspicion that your dog has dog has missed a month or several months treatments, seek advice from your vet as soon as possible about the recommended timing for a heartworm test, which may depend on the area that you live in.
Intestinal Worm Questions:
How long does it take for the worm treatment to start working?
The treatment starts working immediately after it has been given. Complete elimination of worm infestation can, however, take a couple of days.
How can I tell if my dog or cat has worms?
In the early stages of infestation, the signs aren't easy to spot as the worms remain hidden inside your pet's gut, which is why regular worming is important. Some signs to look for include:
1. Visible worms or eggs in the poop or fur
2. Potbellied shape / appearance
3. Lethargy, increased appetite and weight loss
4. Vomiting or diarrhoea
5. Itchy bottom and scooting (scooting is the official term for a pet dragging it's bum along the ground!).
My pet isn't showing any signs of infection should I still worm them?
The signs of worm infestation aren't always obvious. That's why regular worming is important to keep your pet happy and healthy. Regular worming also helps reduce human infections. Worms can infect your pet from contaminated soil, other pets, ingesting fleas or from raw meat.
How often do I treat for worms with the PLC Cat or Dog Worm tablet?
We will send you a worming tablet, specific to your pets’ weight, to be given every three months.
Is there a connection between fleas and worms?
Fleas can be infected with the larval stage of the flea tapeworm. If your pet swallows an infected flea, this could result in a tapeworm infestation. It is important to treat your cat for fleas alongside treating them for worms.
Do pets experience any side effects from PLC worming tablets?
Any Allwormer tablets can occasionally cause mild, short-lived gastro-intestinal signs such as salivating, vomiting or diarrhoea. This may be due to the tablet or can also result from the intestinal worms being killed as a result of the effective product.
Is it necessary to worm an indoor cat?
Unfortunately, even if your cat never ventures outside, they can still be at risk for intestinal worms. Fleas and rodents can carry worm larvae, and it's often impossible to stop them from getting into your house. If your cat ingests an infected flea, common during grooming, or if they catch an infected mouse, they can become infected with worms. Other pets within the household, can also act as transport vehicles for either worms or fleas to potentially come in contact with your indoor cat.
Can intestinal worms affect my family?
People can be infected by numerous of the intestinal worms that our pets can carry. The most susceptible people are children as they can play in contaminated soil and without careful handwashing, they can accidentally ingest worm eggs. Luckily, regular deworming of pets protects our pets and protects our families.
Other ways to limit the risk to children, is to avoid playing in areas where pets toilet. Sandpits are best covered to prevent cats using them as litter boxes. Cleaning up the dog poo from the yard, will also limit the number of worms that can persist in the environment.
Flea and Tick Questions:
What the best way to eliminate fleas from my pet and home?
There are several stages of the flea life cycle that must be addressed. Pet Lovers Club monthly treatment kills adult fleas rapidly to avoid eggs being laid, which would continue to develop into larvae. This stops the environment contamination and stops the flea lifecycle continuing. Additional steps to fully eliminate fleas include vacuuming all areas well, especially where the pets spend most of their time, and wash their bedding in a hot wash weekly for 4 weeks. There are flea sprays that kill adult fleas on pets and on surfaces, but alone they will not completely control a flea infestation.
How does my dog or cat get fleas?
Our pets can pick up fleas from many different places. This includes out on walks, socialising with other animals, from other pets in the household, or even from wild animals such as rabbits and foxes. They can then bring them back home and spread them to other pets, the family, the house and the yard.
How does PLC kill fleas and ticks?
Pet Lovers Club provides effective monthly flea control to your cats and dogs.
The cat flea control is supplied as a tube which contains selamectin, that is applied monthly to the back of the neck as a topical preparation. This is also effective against roundworm, hookworm, ear mites and biting lice. The flea control provided within the cat Complete Combo contains selamectin and sarolaner, that also protects against ticks, which is very important in parts of Australia.
The dog flea and tick control is supplied as a chewable tablet which contains pyrantel, sarolaner and moxidectin. This is given orally every month to your dog. This is also effective against roundworm and hookworm, as well as preventing heartworm disease.
How long does it take before PLC flea starts working?
PLC Flea control starts killing fleas within 6 hours and ticks within 24 hours after treatment.
How old does my pet need to be?
Pet Lovers Club Flea control can be applied to:
Cats from 8 weeks old weighing 1.25 kg or more.
Dogs from 8 weeks old weighing 1.25kg or more.
Do I need to apply more than once a month?
Pet Lovers Club flea treatments only need to apply it to your pet once a month.
How long after application can my dog be bathed or go swimming?
Unlike topical treatments, as the PLC Flea control for dogs is a chewable tablet, swimming and bathing will not alter the effectiveness of the product at all.
My pets spend most of their time indoors, do I still need to use a flea or treatments?
Even pets that spend most of their time indoors can get fleas. Fleas can find their way into your home on clothing or other animals. It's still important to regularly protect your dog or cat with a flea product.
Can I use the Pet Lovers Club Flea control if my pet is on medication?
The products used by PLC are compatible with most commonly used medications, however do not use the products if your pet has a known sensitivity to any of the active ingredients. If you have any concerns about your pet’s medication and the use of PLC products, please contact us or your veterinarian.
Can PLC Flea control be used on other animals?
The PLC flea control products have been selected for your pet based on their species, weight and geographical location. They should only be used for the pet for which the details were provided, to avoid overdosing / underdosing or incorrectly using a product in the wrong species.
Do fleas and ticks pose a serious health threat to my pet?
Fleas commonly cause irritation and discomfort to your pets. In pets which are quite hypersensitive to flea bites, this can result in Flea Allergic Dermatitis (FAD). Severe flea infestations can even result in anaemia. Fleas may also transmit tapeworms to your pet.
There are numerous types of ticks that occur in Australia; however, the most serious risk is from the paralysis tick. The paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) can cause hind limb weakness which can progress to full paralysis and even death.
If I notice a tick on my pet, what's is the best course of action?
Monthly treatment with PLC Flea / Tick treatment is the most effective method for avoiding ticks, however regular inspections of your pets are worthwhile. If a tick is observed, tick removers are the best method of removing ticks. They are used to safely remove the tick, without leaving behind the head which could cause infection. If you live in a paralysis tick area and suspect your pet may have had a paralysis tick attached to it, seek veterinary attention.
Should I use PLC Flea on my pet all year round or only during the warmer months?
With central heating and warm indoor houses, the traditional flea summer season no longer occurs, and fleas can continue to cause problems for our pets all year round. Fleas can infest your home and remain dormant for many months. The PLC Flea monthly subscription service avoids fleas causing issues throughout all seasons.
